The Town of Penetanguishene is preparing an Arena & Recreation Centre Study to guide decision-making with respect to the future of the Penetanguishene Memorial Community Centre. By identifying current needs and a strategic implementation plan, the Study will ensure that the Town continues to provide a high standard of indoor recreation services.

I am very concerned about spending 50 million on a new Arena/Recreation Centre.

Our town only has a population of about 10,000 people which would be responsible to pay back the 50+ million dollars for a new Arena/Recreation Centre. It is going to put to much of a burden on the homeowners property taxes. I would like to see how our taxes in Penetanguishene compare to other towns of similar size and population before even considering adding 50+ million dollars of debt to the towns books. With all the debt the town, province, and country owes right now I strongly feel this project is something no one can afford at this time. Thanks.

Please note that the Public Open House planned for Saturday, September 19th, 2020 has been canceled.
Due to the current climate both provincially and locally with respect to COVID-19 and upon recent correspondence with the Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit, the Town of Penetanguishene has made the decision to cancel the Public Information Session on the Arena and Recreation Centre Study that was scheduled for this Saturday, September 19 in Rotary Champlain Wendat Park. Town staff are exploring alternatives of an electronic nature with the consultants and will update the public accordingly.
- If you are a representative of a group with an interest in indoor recreation facilities, please participate in the stakeholder consultation process. A questionnaire has been sent to key organizations for completion by early September. Please contact us if you wish to receive a copy of the questionnaire.

As an avid user of the current facility it would be a loss to see it destroyed ,but everything must evolve

A new facility should be all encompassing and should include , both the ice hockey facility, a curling pad that during the spring and summer can be used for reception rentals. A place to house the sports hall of fame, an all purpose pad that can be used as a gym, shuffleboard, yoga , tap or seniors use area. Ideally the pad could also be used for basketball, soccer , and baseball training or games. a collection of meeting rooms and offices for major user groups to set up and use. If it becomes a cost effective facility do you add a splash pad ,pool ,weight room ,and walking track as well .I also feel that bowl seating in the arena is the ideal seating for spectators vs seating on just one side, the seating must be conducive to spectator comfort metal benches do not cut it. The building would be two stores high with the ice surfaces on the main floor and all others located on the second story.
