What is the Tree Planting Strategy?

The Town of Penetanguishene is developing a Tree Planting Strategy with the help of experts from SLR Consulting (Canada) Ltd., to guide future tree planting efforts on public and private lands. The goal is to increase tree canopy cover, improve environmental health, and enhance community spaces. This strategy will identify priority planting areas, recommend species, and outline actions to achieve long-term sustainability.

This initiative is funded through the Town’s Tree Compensation Reserve, which is supported by revenues from development applications and tree removal permits. The Strategy will help ensure that future planting decisions are made with a clear understanding of their financial implications and will support the long‑term sustainability of the Reserve.

Why is this important?

Trees provide many benefits, including:

  • Cleaner air and water
  • Reduced erosion and stormwater runoff
  • Shade and cooling
  • Wildlife habitat
  • Improved property values and community well-being

How can the public participate?

Community input is essential! Here’s how you can participate:

  • Online Survey: Share your ideas and priorities for tree planting.
  • Interactive Map: Drop a pin on areas you think need more trees.
  • Public Meeting: Attend an open house to review the draft strategy and provide feedback.
  • Stay Connected: Updates will be posted on https://www.connectpenetanguishene.ca and the Town’s social media.
