    Join Bretton from Total Sports The Bike Shop on Thursday, June 17 at 7:00 PM for an "Introduction to Bike Maintenance Workshop" via zoom.

    This workshop will go over the basics of bike maintenance including how to get your bike ready for the season, how to change a flat tire, and what you should be doing regularly to keep your bike in good working order.

    Registration for this workshop is required.

    Bike Month Strava Segment Race

    In partnership with the Simcoe County Mountain Bike Club

    The race segment will be on dirt trail best suited for mountain bikes.

    How to Participate:

    1. Register for an account on Strava. You will need to use Strava to participate. You can use the Strava APP on your phone or upload your ride to Strava from your preferred GPS device. Make sure you upload your rides to Strava when you are done if you are using a GPS device. *Tip* Start a little before a segment starts and stop a little bit after it ends to ensure your ride registers. The segment can also be part of a longer ride! https://www.strava.com/
    2. Register here to qualify (so we know you are competing)! Once you register for an account, sign up for the race under "programs" or "bike month". Make sure to use the same name as you do on Strava so we know it's you! https://top.recdesk.com/Community/Program?category=11
    3. The official Penetanguishene Bike Month Strava Segment will be noted on your registration receipt (in addition to the link above).

    How to Participate:

    1. Register for an account and sign up for the "Bike Month Distance Challenge" on RecDesk, here: https://top.recdesk.com/Community/Program
    2. Log into your RecDesk account once a week to fill out your weekly KM form (under account - forms). New forms will be added each Monday morning in June.
    3. A reminder email will be sent each Monday, letting you know that a new form is available to be submitted.
    4. If you forget a week, don't worry! The forms will remain on your account until the end of the month. We won't be punishing procrastinators.
    5. FINAL submissions are due by 12:00 PM on July 2.


    Categories:

    Help your category be the distance champion of Penetanguishene Bike Month!

    There will be no category-specific prize winners BUT the category with the most AVERAGE KM biked will be crowned the winner!

    1. Youth (under 18)
    2. Adult (18 - 34)
    3. Adult Prime (35-59)
    4. Senior (60+)


    Leaderboard:

    The top 10 men and women in each category will be posted and celebrated on the Town's social media accounts and websites!

    Prizes:

    1st place for Men and Women will win a prize with additional prizes awarded randomly from a draw! Only participants who have biked each week are entered into the draw.

    Penetanguishene - PCMA All Things Wheels Bike Decorating Contest

    Theme: Canadian Summer

    *motorized devices- only motorized mobility devices are eligible, ex. mobility scooter, wheelchair. No dirt bikes, motorcycles, etc.*

    Categories: Children 0-4 years, 5-8 year, 9+ year, & adult

    How to Enter:

    You can enter yourself or parents can enter their child in the contest by submitting a photo of their "wheels" by clicking "add your idea" here: https://www.connectpenetanguishene.ca/bike-month/brainstormers/bike-decorating-contest/ideas/new

    be sure to add their name and age category with the submission!

    *By submitting a photo, you are agreeing to give permission to use your photo as part of the contest*

    Winners: The top 3 photos with the most likes in each age category on connectpenetanguishene.ca will win a prize!

    Winners will be announced on the connectpenetanguishene.ca website and The Recreation and Events Facebook page on Canada Day (July 1). First, second and third place winners will receive a prize, arrangements will be made with winners for prize pick up.

    Voting/Likes: Online public voting will be available on connectpenetanguishene.ca without having to register! Voting opens on June 1.

    Prizes: Prizes will be provided by the Friends of the Penetanguishene Museum and the Town of Penetanguishene. (If you are interested in providing additional prizes, please email events@penetanguishene.ca.

    Rules & Regulations:

    • Motorized devices- only motorized mobility devices are eligible, ex. mobility scooter, wheelchair. No dirt bikes, motorcycles, etc.
    • Your decorated "wheels" must still be rideable. A video may be requested to demonstrate rideability if in question.
    • Judging will take place on the Connect Penetanguishene Site. Awards will be based on public votes with any ties being determined by the the Friends of the Penetanguishene Centennial Museum & Archives. The link to the voting site will be shared on the Town's social media accounts.
    • Photos must be submitted by Monday, June 28.
    • Online public voting will be available until 8:00 PM on Monday, June 28.
    • Winners will be emailed and will be announced on the Town of Penetanguishene's websites and social media accounts on July 1, 2021.

    Looking for a fun, active and social VIRTUAL experience? Municipalities within Simcoe County have teamed up to offer our Actively Aging (55+) participants a FREE virtual Sit & Spin class and Lunch Club program.


    Sit & Spin

    This program is led by a certified spin instructor and uses a pedal exerciser for the arms or legs and is designed to improve blood circulation and muscle toning. Equipment available to borrow.

    Penetanguishene Trail

    The Trail consists of limestone, asphalt and paved sidewalk sections with a total lenght of 4.8 km. Two other trails also branch from the main trail including the Copeland Creek Trail and the Discovery Harbour Trail. This trail leads to points of interest along the waterfront through beautiful Rotary Champlain Wendat Park and are never far from amenities. While exploring these trails, you are also experiencing the history of this area including Samuel de Champlain, Etienne Brule and the Huron Nation. Click here for and interactive map

    Trans Canada Trail

    This trail begins at the border of Tiny Township in the west along the waterfront of Penetanguishene connecting with the Town of Midland at Penetanguishene's southerly boundary.

    Discovery Harbour Trail

    This 3.0 km trail begins at the Historic Port of Penetanguishene along the waterfront heading east where lumber mills, tanneries and a grand hotel once stood. Trail is a paved asphalt trail that leads to Discovery Harbour.

    Copeland Creek Trail

    This trail is a connection off of the Great Trail and heads along Copeland Creek over provincially significant habitat areas, and along Champlain Road. The trail is 1.25 km in length and has floating docks, bridges and crushed limestone for walking. It provides a great connection to the Champlain Road Bike Lanes. Click here for an interactive map

    Payette Trails

    This natural trail has many loops in a wooded setting by the Payette water tower and covers 2 km. Click here for an interactive map.

    Tom Coffin Trail

    This paved trail adjoining Tom Coffin Memorial Park connects to Edward Street and Robert Street West. Tom Coffin Trail is 1.1 km in length. Click here for an interactive map.

    Town of Penetanguishene Trail Etiquette

    1. Expect and respect other users
    2. Know and obey rules and laws
    3. Stay on the trail
    4. Do not disturb plants or animals
    5. Do not litter, please poop and scoop
    6. Keep dog on a leash
    7. Respect private property and residents
    8. Be prepared, to ensure your safety and the safety of others
    9. Stay on the right, pass on the left
    10. Slow down when approaching other travelers, and yield to the faster traveler
    11. Be courteous and communicate with other trail users

    This June, The Town of Penetanguishene will be participating in the ParticipACTION Community Better Challenge, the physical activity challenge that rallies communities to get moving.

    From June 1 – 30, let’s get active to support Penetanguishene’s quest to be Canada’s Most Active Community and win $100,000 for local physical activity initiatives.

    Participate by

    1. Signing up for the Bike Month Distance Challenge or Bike Month Strava Segment Race
    2. Downloading the (FREE) ParticipACTION app where you can track your activity and contribute to the challenge. Every move counts! #CommunityBetterChallenge
    3. Participate in a Town of Penetanguishene Recreation Program
    4. Encourage your organization to sign up and submit move minutes from your own events!
